As a company of independent financial professionals offering impartial advice, the Lightship team works together to ensure the success and financial confidence for all its clients. The team takes an integrated approach to wealth management by offering a comprehensive array of financial services. We also work closely in tandem with your attorneys, accountants, and any of your other advisors to ensure that the suggestions you are given align with all of your goals.

Jonathan Wolff, AIF®

Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. is an independent investment and financial services firm in Newton Lower Falls, Massachusetts which I founded in 2006.  I have tailored my business to focus on providing sophisticated wealth planning and investment management strategies to affluent families, “suddenly single” people, and small institutions. My focused goal is to use my broad experience to help you get to and maintain a well-lived life. Getting that right is the only option.

I grew up in Guilford, Connecticut, and graduated in 1983 from Muhlenberg College with a psychology degree. From there I went to New York City, starting my career in the financial services industry with a large brokerage firm. In 1987, I wanted to be closer to my Hanover, NH and Nantucket roots, so I relocated with that firm to Boston. Then in 2006, I decided to move our team to start an independent firm called Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. My goal was to enhance our existing full services wealth management model and deliver it in a more highly personalized way. To become independent from the traditional brokerage firm model and to have a more intimate and less corporate "client experience" was the achieved objective.

As a company of independent financial professionals, the Lightship team works together to ensure the success and financial confidence for all its clients. We design customized strategies for you and your family based on our far-reaching discussions. We help define what financial success looks like to you as it relates to your own situation. We spend a great deal of time identifying your personal and life goals, then to your dream goals. Generational planning is also part of that process, which includes your family members, and helps to transition in your legacy goals. We do this in tandem with your attorneys, accountants, and any of your other trusted advisors to ensure that the suggestions you are given align with you and your family’s decisions.

Jon holds FINRA Series 6, 7, 9, 10, 63, and 65 securities registrations as an Investment Adviser Representative of Commonwealth Financial Network®. He has his Chartered Life Underwriter® (CLU®) certification from The American College and has earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) professional designation awarded by the Center for Fiduciary Studies.

Also, everyone at Lightship gives back. We all have done philanthropic work for various charities in the Boston area. Personally, I have been recognized by and give back to:

I enjoy spending time with my wife, Chris, and our two children, Jack and Caroline. I reside in Dover and Nantucket, Massachusetts, and love to golf (hole in one 6/4/02!), snow and water ski. We all are avid readers and try to spend as much time near (in, on or under!) the water as possible. And my little-known trivia is I am an accomplished scrimshaw and wood carver and have sold the ivory fittings to Margaret Thatcher’s lightship basket.

We are often asked where we get the name Lightship from. The company name comes from Jon’s nautical history with the lightships on Nantucket. Lightships were anchored vessels moored near risky waters where lighthouses would prove impracticable. These ships were equipped with warning systems designed to alert passing vessels of any imminent risk. So the name reflects their desire to serve and protect their clients.

Recent Honors

Jon was named a Five Star Wealth Manager*** for each of the past five years. He has also qualified for Commonwealth’s prestigious Leaders Conference and Chairman’s Retreat every consecutive year since joining Commonwealth in 2006. Scott Schutte, AIF®

I have over 25 years of industry experience and currently serve as a Wealth Management Director for individuals and family with financial planning and investment management needs at Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. My primary focus has been working with individuals, families, and family-owned businesses on diverse high-level investment management strategies, estate planning, tax planning issues and insurance and risk management. I have broad experience in working with CPAs, attorneys, and multi-generational family members to help clients seek their financial goals. 

I grew up in Holden, Massachusetts and graduated from Franklin Pierce University. I started my career in the financial services industry working for a large brokerage firm in Boston, then later moved to San Francisco. I spent the majority (21+ years) of my professional career working at Commonwealth Financial Network®, the independent broker/dealer with which Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. is affiliated. In my years there, I managed the advanced planning, investment management, insurance/risk management and retirement planning departments while also providing oversight and strategic direction to these departments.

We take an integrated approach to wealth management by offering a comprehensive array of financial services. We also work closely in tandem with your attorneys, accountants, and any of your other advisors to ensure that the suggestions you are given align with all your goals.

I have written and published many financial articles and was a columnist for Financial Advisor Magazine, Registered REP Magazine, On Wall Street, ThinkAdvisor, and Boomer Magazine. I am regularly quoted in numerous financial publications, including the Wall Street Journal and ThinkAdvisor. I am licensed with a FINRA Series 6, 7, 63, and 65 securities registrations and life and health insurance licenses. I have also earned the Accredited Investment Fiduciary® (AIF®) professional designation awarded by the Center for Fiduciary Studies, qualifying me to consult with individuals and plan sponsors about their retirement plan goals and requirements.

My wife Leslie and I live in Dover, Massachusetts, with our three children: Beck, Luke, and Grayson. I am a member of the Perkins School for the Blind Business Partnership Board. Through our financial support, Lightship Wealth Strategies Inc. has annually sponsored the Perkins School for the Blind Easter Egg Hunt over the last 7 years. I have volunteered at charities that include the Second Step, Habitat for Humanity & TOPSoccer. I am most proud of our contributions to the Children’s Brain Tumor Research, the PLGA Foundation, and the Dana-Farber Pediatric Oncology Department.

Justin Turcotte

My primary role at Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. is to assist clients as a Wealth Advisor. I also serve as the Director of Portfolio Management.  After starting my financial services career at a large brokerage firm, I teamed up with Jonathan Wolff in 2001.  Five years late we decided to start Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. 

As Director of Portfolio Management, my responsibilities include developing and maintaining the investment management selection process for mutual funds, EFTs, Stocks, and all investment products available through our broker dealer and RIA, Commonwealth Financial Network®.  I also work with clients on financial plans as well as any insurance needs including life, disability and long term care.

I grew up in Gardner, Massachusetts and have lived in Central Mass for most of my life.  I am a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a BS in consumer finance.  After graduating from college, I worked in the financial aid department for a medical school.  There I discovered an appreciation for financial planning for families as they prepare for this large education expense.  That experience led me to the financial services industry.

I currently reside in Grafton, Massachusetts with my wife Sharon, and two children, Noah and Lily. I am an avid Boston sports fan and currently play hockey regularly in addition to golfing and hiking with my family. In my spare time I’ve coached over 40 youth hockey, lacrosse and soccer teams. I have been involved with many charitable activities including the Animal Rescue League of Boston, Fostering Care Inc., Community Harvest Project, the Second Step, Boston Health Care for the Homeless and Habitat for Humanity.

I am licensed with my FINRA Series 6, 7, 63, and 66 securities registrations as an Investment Adviser Representative of Commonwealth Financial Network®.

Evan Mattern, CFP®, MS

I am a Wealth Advisor for Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. and my focus is providing integrated investment management and financial planning to individuals and families. Integrated financial planning and investment management is achieved by first identifying the goals and dreams of our clients and using that information to create a financial plan, from which investment our investment decisions will be based on. By taking a holistic approach to each client’s financial picture, it not only allows us to prepare for our clients’ desired future, but it also provides us the opportunity to prepare for key financial decisions. Everyone’s financial situation and aspirations are unique, so it is our belief that customized plans, tailored to each individual client are paramount. My broad experience in the industry has provided me with the expertise to solve complex estate, insurance/risk management and financial planning issues that might arise. Clients that tend to seek my services include, but are not limited to:

  • Young professionals starting to accumulate wealth
  • Families seeking financial security
  • Those experiencing big life changes (recently retired, married, divorced, etc.)

At Lightship Wealth Strategies we believe that the greatest gift a family member can pass to a younger generation is financial freedom. We empower our clients by offering themselves and their family financial education in plain speak, without the typical industry jargon. Our focus on educating multiple generations within a family is the reason we refer to Lightship as a generational wealth management office. An often-overlooked benefit of working with an advisor at Lightship is the time it gives back to you and your family to focus on things you want to spend your time on. 

I graduated from Bentley University with a BS in Finance and a MS in Marketing Analytics. Additionally, I received a Certificate in Financial Planning from Boston University. I am CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional holding FINRA Series 7 and 66 securities licenses along with being licensed in life and health insurance. 

Prior to joining Lightship, I worked for Commonwealth Financial Network in various roles facilitating financial advisors and their clients. I grew up in San Diego, CA and although I do miss the weather, my family has since relocated to the east coast. I currently live in Natick and enjoy spending most of my time outdoors during the summer and snowboarding in the winter. I am an avid sports follower and have grown to become a fan of most New England sports, but appreciate the success of all New England sports.

Each year Lightship Wealth Strategies focuses our charitable efforts on a specific organization. Last year we chose Boston Health Care for the Homeless Program. With the help of our clients, friends, and families we were able to donate a BHCHP record 2,665 pairs of socks which accounted for over 20% of the homeless population in the Greater Boston area. Some organizations I continue to support and have supported in recent years are the Second Step Program and Perkins School for the Blind.

 

Jack Wolff

I am a Wealth Advisor for Lightship Wealth Strategies, Inc. Within Lightship, it is my main goal to prioritize our fiduciary responsibility while gaining a deep understanding of the dreams our clients would like to achieve. Navigating financial inflection points is critical to achieving those dreams and thus becomes a priority in our goals planning. As I’ve grown my career within Lightship, one of the most prominent points of service that I feel we provide is working with families as a pillar of education and support. The Lightship family maximizes that service so our clients can feel secure in planning for multi-generational financial freedom. That includes, but is not limited to:

  • Young professionals solidifying a financial foundation
  • Newlyweds taking their first steps forward as a family
  • Benefactors of successful retirees

Prior to joining Lightship, I worked in State Street’s asset management division where I consulted wealth management firms on investment selection and business development. I graduated from Trinity College with a B.A. in Sociology and grew up in Dover, MA. I currently live in Boston and spend as much time as possible outdoors, either skiing with friends or spending time with family on Nantucket.

The entire Lightship family spends a portion of our time giving back to those in need. In 2018, Lightship donated 2,665 pairs of socks to Boston Health Care for the Homeless as the #1 donation team, providing socks to over 20% of the homeless population in Boston.

I currently hold multiple registrations, including the FINRA Series 7, 63, and 66 securities licenses through Commonwealth Financial Network®, and am also licensed to sell life and health insurance.  

Bonnie MacEachern

I am the Client Service Director at Lightship and I’m responsible for the establishment and maintenance of client accounts, asset transfers, compliance within the office, keeping clients up to date of various administrative processes, and, most important, managing Jon. I joined the team in 1990 where I helped run the operations department for a regional firm.

I am a native of Massachusetts, having grown up in Wilmington.  I didn’t go very far, graduating from Salem State University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree in business management. I hold the FINRA Series 6 securities registration with Commonwealth Financial Network. 

I currently live in the Boston neighborhood of West Roxbury with my other half Sal, and our rescued Treeing Walker Coonhound, named Shemp.  I love traveling, being on the beach, trying new restaurants, walking Shemp, and spending time with my family and friends.
