Last week, the Lightship team headed down to Bristol, Rhode Island for International Coastal Cleanup Day. It turned out to be one of those experiences that reminds you why community matters.
Partnering with Save The Bay, a Rhode Island nonprofit that’s been protecting Narragansett Bay since 1970, Scott, Evan, Jack, Bonnie, Lucas, and Tristan spent the morning at Colt State Park doing something simple but meaningful: picking up trash along the coastline.
Save The Bay’s mission focuses on education, advocacy, and hands-on restoration projects to keep the bay clean and thriving for generations to come. That’s work that aligns perfectly with Lightship’s commitment to the communities we serve.
The cleanup brought together about a dozen volunteers, all armed with garbage bags and a shared goal. The team was split into groups to collect debris and record what they found for the Ocean Conservancy‘s annual marine debris report. It’s an important dataset that helps track pollution trends and inform policy.

Some of the day’s “best” finds? A fishing reel, a tire, a pair of shoes, and bottles of Ginger Ale that looked like they’d been sitting there since the ’80s. Not glamorous work, but every piece of trash removed is one less threat to the wildlife that calls the bay home.
A huge thank you goes to July Lewis, Save The Bay’s Volunteer Manager, who coordinated everything and made sure the event ran smoothly. July was there on the ground with the team, and her energy and passion for the cause made the whole experience that much better. After wrapping up the cleanup, the group took in a classic Rhode Island sunset before grabbing dinner at Quito’s Restaurant and Bar in Bristol. The perfect way to close out a day well spent.
